LG G7 will not launch during this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona

It seems like the LG G7 may arrive later than expected, as the company’s vice chairman and CEO of LG Electronics, Jo Seong-jin, ordered a revision of the device, at least according to a report by Korea Herald. The source also claims that the phone’s launch will be delayed to April because of this, even though it was expected to arrive in February or March. If this info is accurate, the LG G7 will not launch during this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, where the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will get announced, as per recent confirmation.

Korea Herald actually bases its article on the info provided by a ‘company official who asked for anonymity’. LG’s employees who are developing the LG G7 were basically told to stop developing the phone, and to review the device altogether, from scratch. This move by Jo Seong-jin could have something to do with the company’s money-losing smartphone department, as he said during a press conference at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, that LG will unveil smartphones when it is needed, and that the company will not launch new phones just because their competitors did.

Jo Seong-jin also said that he’s considering changing the smartphone’s brand name during his speech at CES last week, which is rather interesting. Now, it is somewhat unlikely that LG will change the LG G7’s design significantly at this stage of its development, but anything is possible following Jo Seong-jin’s recent order. It seems like the company is ready to do whatever it takes to make its smartphone business profitable, and Jo Seong-jin is probably only trying to make sure that the LG G7 is a phone worthy of announcing.

Having said that, the LG G7 will likely resemble the LG V30, it will ship with really thin bezels, even thinner than the LG V30, probably, and it will be made out of metal and glass. The phone is expected to sport a dual camera setup on its back, while it is still unknown whether it will sport a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, or will LG perhaps manage to include an in-display fingerprint scanner instead.

The phone will, almost certainly, be fueled by the Snapdragon 845 64-bit octa-core processor which was announced recently, and you can expect to see 6GB of RAM on the inside of this phone. The LG G7 will include a rather large QHD+ P-OLED display, most probably, and Android 8.0 Oreo will come pre-installed on the device, along with LG’s custom UI.

Android 8.0 Oreo Beta Rolling Out To The LG V30 In The US

It seems like a beta build of Android 8.0 Oreo for the LG V30 is now rolling out, at least according to the latest report. At least one LG V30 user in the US received the update, as the provided screenshot proves. This update comes with the latest January security patch, and the stable update should start rolling out to US customers in the near future, as the company had started rolling it out to South Korean consumers at the end of last month.

Now, it’s worth noting that European users did not get the update yet either, and that applies for the rest of the world as well, only South Korean units received it. As most of you already know, the LG V30 runs a custom skin on top of Android, which is a part of the reason why it’s taking LG some time to release Android 8.0 Oreo update to the LG V30. As part of the Android 8.0 Oreo update, LG V30 users will receive a number of Android 8.0 Oreo features that have been announced for Google’s Pixel and Nexus phones last year.

The LG V30 will get the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, while notification dots will also be included. Android 8.0 Oreo will also bring a slight redesign to the company’s skin, and some additional battery management features will be included in the update as well. For those of you who do not recall, the LG V30 was announced back in August last year, and it shipped with Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box, with LG’s UX 6.0 skin on top of it.

The LG V30 is still the company’s flagship smartphone, as the LG G7 still did not arrive, and it will not arrive for at least another month or so, even though the phone is rumored to be announced in March or April. The LG V30 is made out of metal and glass, it sports a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, and a dual camera setup on the back. This handset also comes with really thin bezels, and it’s quite powerful.

The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 835 64-bit octa-core processor, while you will find 4GB of RAM on the inside of the device. The LG V30 sports a 6-inch QHD+ (2880 x 1440) P-OLED display, while a 3,300mAh non-removable battery is also included in this package. 16 and 13-megapixel shooters are included on the back of this phone, while a single 5-megapixel camera can be found on the device’s front side.

Galaxy S9, S9 Plus Concepts Look Somewhat Realistic

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are amongst the most anticipated handsets of this year, and while we’re waiting for Samsung to unveil them, which will happen at the end of next month at MWC 2018, a YouTube channel called ‘DBS DESIGNING’ has released concept Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus handsets.

DBS DESIGNING’s work is portrayed in the video which is embedded down below, and even though the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will not look exactly like the devices pictured here, they could end up looking quite similar, actually, read on.

These two devices are made out of metal and glass, while both its back and front sides are curved. Only the Galaxy S9 sports a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, and it comes with a single rear-facing camera, while the Galaxy S9 Plus comes with a dual camera setup, but the fingerprint scanner is not located on the back of the phone, it seems to be embedded into the display instead.

The power / lock key is placed on the right-hand side of both of these phones, while the Bixby key and volume up / down buttons can be found on the left. A Type-C USB port is located on the bottom of both phones, and it is flanked by a loudspeaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The bezels on both of these phones are really thin, and the top bezel is the thickest of them all, which is expected to be the case with the real Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus units, actually. The display sports rounded corners on both smartphones, and the Galaxy S9 Plus is noticeably larger than its sibling.

Now, in addition to envisioning their design, DBS DESIGNING also envisioned some specs for these two smartphones. The Galaxy S9 sports a 5.6-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display, while the Galaxy S9 Plus comes with a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED panel. Real life Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus handset will probably ship with somewhat larger displays, as the Galaxy S9 is expected to sport a 5.8-inch panel, while the Galaxy S9 Plus will probably arrive with a 6.2 or 6.3-inch display.

Both phones come with a 12-megapixel dual shooter on the back (f/1.5 and f/2.4 aperture), while an 8-megapixel camera is included on the front. IP68 certification for water and dust resistance is also included here, and the same can be said for an iris scanner. These two concept phones sport 4GB and 6GB of RAM, respectively, while they also offer 64GB and 128GB of storage. The source has shown off Black, Silver, Blue, White and Gold variant of their concept Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus smartphones, which you can check out in the provided video. The real Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus may resemble these two concept phones in terms of the design, except for the fact that both phones will probably sport a rear-facing fingerprint scanner.

Google’s Pixelbook Can Now Boot The Experimental Fuchsia OS

Google’s Pixelbook is now capable of booting Fuchsia OS, an experimental operating system that the Alphabet-owned company has been developing since at least 2016, with its first reference appearing in the form of a barebones GitHub project in August of that year. Pixelbook support has been added as part of a Fuchsia OS build that surfaced earlier this month and has now been

tested by Ars Technica. The current state of the software appears to be much more stable than the unofficially compiled variant which appeared on the World Wide Web last spring but was only able to run on top of Android without doing much. The newly released build can instead run on the Pixelbook natively and is the most functional version of the OS so far.

The development is significant as it marks the first occasion on which the general public is able to boot Fuchsia OS on any piece of hardware and have it run on its own, based solely on the Zircon microkernel which Google built from the ground up without any Linux-based backing. Anyone planning on compiling the build on their own should add ” -release” to the end of their build command as the current version of the Flutter SDK compiles a debug variant of the software by default. The OS boots to a lock screen which shows a perfectly centered clock, with its bottom right corner also containing an icon for logging into a personal or guest account, as well as connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Only the guest login is said to be working, though the personal one suggests Fuchsia OS will use a Google Account, much like Chrome OS and Android already do. The icon in the top left corner seen on the lock screen is used for switching between what appear to be tablet and smartphone modes, with the latter one having a design that’s reminiscent of the one supported by the aforementioned APK build from mid-2017.

The Pixelbook’s keyboard, trackpad, and touchscreen all work in the current version of the OS, as do USB ports and computer mice, though connecting the latter will leave you with two cursors on the screen, with one still being dedicated to the trackpad. USB ports can currently be used for an Ethernet connection, presently the only option for connecting the Fuchsia-powered Pixelbook to the Internet as its Wi-Fi capabilities remain broken. The device will also recognize a charging cable and charge as expected, in addition to providing accurate battery readings. Hardware optimizations still isn’t at a particularly high level, as most functionalities reportedly lag and the Pixelbook itself is always running hot while hosting the experimental OS.

The current build of the software can pull up the command mode which doesn’t do much and also features a video app, albeit one that doesn’t work in any sense of that word. A similarly non-responsive music app can also be found bundled with the OS. The previously seen “Armadillo” user shell now features fewer placeholders and more elements that actually support interaction but most of the apps they promise to hold appear to be non-operational. One exception to that state of affairs is the OS’s integrated browser which is also unstable and can’t render the majority of pages in their entirety, though it reportedly works fine with Google.com. The alternative “Capybara” user shell is now also part of the package and is obviously meant to target desktops, with its overall design being similar to that of Chrome OS in regards to basic icon placement.

The OS has a functional “Recent Apps” feature that’s basically identical to the one found in contemporary versions of Android, allowing users to quickly switch between apps and swipe away the ones they want to force-close. Tapping the date on the home screen brings up a number of incomplete profiles and suggested apps whose purpose remains unknown, in addition to changing the wallpaper of the OS, albeit none of the recommended apps are actually able to launch. The overall state of the software is unsurprisingly largely unfinished and while Fuchsia is certainly in active development, it’s likely to take years before it even approaches a scenario in which it’s considered for commercialization. The OS appears to be lacking a notification mechanic and any kind of system settings even in the form of non-functional placeholders, suggesting Google’s engineers are still working on deciding on its experimental design and making sure the basic elements and features they’re implementing work well with the largely untested Zircon microkernel which remains surrounded by many questions.

Samsung To Debut A 5G Modem For Android Phones In 2018

Samsung is planning to debut a 5G modem for mobile chips meant to be integrated into one of its upcoming Exynos platforms for the company’s Android smartphones by the end of the year, BusinessKorea reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The modem may be part of the next flagship system-on-chip from Samsung’s foundry unit that will power the Galaxy S10 lineup and the Galaxy Note 10 phablet in 2019. Sources claim the creation was already presented to Samsung’s major partners during last week’s Consumer Electronics Show, having supposedly been privately showcased at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The chip was unveiled as the Exynos 5G but that may only be a tentative name, according to the same report.

Besides being compatible with the fifth generation of mobile networks whose first standard was fully defined just last month and hence allow the OEM to offer a new level of connectivity support to its customers, the modem is also meant to allow Samsung to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm as far as mobile telecommunications solutions are concerned.

The Exynos 5G was developed by Samsung’s System LSI Business Department and its prototypes are expected to be made available to the company’s wireless division in the second half of the year.

The chip is likely to be used for testing Samsung’s 5G equipment that’s recently been ordered by Verizon. It’s currently unclear since when has the South Korean tech giant been developing the exact configuration of the Exynos 5G but the modem is said to be entirely compliant with the Release 15 NSA 5G NR specification announced last month that’s scheduled to be completed in June.

Both high-frequency mmWave bands and those below 6GHz are said to be supported by the Exynos 5G, with its backward compatibility reportedly going as far as 2G. Its carrier aggregation solution can allow for peak download speeds of 5Gbps, according to the same report.

The Exynos 5G or a refined version of the thereof should be commercialized within Samsung’s smartphones in early 2019, insiders claim, adding that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 or however the Snapdragon 845 successor ends up being called should also feature an entirely 5G-ready chip. Intel is expected to commercialize its own 5G-enabled XMM8060 modem in mid-2019, while Samsung should share first official details on its upcoming 5G modem in the second half of the year.

LG G7 Render Appears Online, Sports Thin Bezels

The LG G7 will probably be announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next month, even though a recent rumorsuggested that it will drop in March, and the alleged LG G7 render has just surfaced online. If you take a look at the provided image, you will see the phone itself, while the source claims that this is an official render of the device. As you can see, the device sports extremely thin bezels, just like the LG V30, and its display sports curved corners. It seems like two cameras are included on the phone’s front side, as you can see in the top left corner of its front side, and the phone seems to sports a frame made out of metal.

On the left-hand side of this smartphone, it is rather easy to sport volume up and volume down keys, while we, unfortunately, did not get an image of the device’s back side, but the phone will probably ship with a glass back, just like its predecessor, and the LG V30. We cannot confirm that this is an official render, of course, but it is possible, it is similar enough to the LG V30 to be real, but on the other hand, it’s also quite possible that this is just a really solid render made by a third-party source.

The LG G7 will almost certainly sport an 18:9 display aspect ratio, and a fingerprint scanner will probably be placed on its back, where a dual camera setup will be located as well. The LG G7 is, just like its predecessors, expected to sport with one regular RGB rear-racing camera, and one ultra wide-angle snapper. The phone is expected to ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 64-bit octa-core processor, even though a recent rumor claimed that LG will utilize the Snapdragon 835 instead.

LG will probably include 6GB of RAM on the inside of this phone, and the device will ship with at least 64GB of internal storage. The LG G7 is also expected to sport wireless charging (Qi standard), while Android 8.0 Oreo will come pre-installed on the phone, along with LG’s custom UI. Now, the company had already confirmed that the phone will be called the LG G7, and that it will sport Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging standard.
